AMPLIFEST 2012: "Instrument"

Os Fugazi são uma banda especial: fruto da emergência do hardcore em Washington, capital dos EUA, no início dos anos 80, MacKaye, Picciotto, Lally e Canty são os mais leais praticantes da ética DIY e, juntos, algumas das figuras mais importantes do punk de transição para os anos 90. Como os Clash, levaram o sentido do punk a sítios que só os At The Drive-in e os Refused, nos finais da derradeira década do século XX, almejariam – não ter limites, nem para a criatividade, nem para o que se podia deixar no palco.

Instrument, um filme de Jem Cohen feito em parceria com os Fugazi, retrata a banda, a sua evolução, a formação da sua identidade e a sua deontologia ao longo de doze anos. Reunindo concertos, ensaios, entrevistas tanto aos membros do quarteto de Washington como a fãs, o filme revela-se como um valioso documento sobre o punk recente, sobre o DIY e o sobre as contribuições dos Fugazi para cada um destes elementos, essenciais para a criação de música e arte numa economia de mercado sem ritmo para apreciar a evolução da estética.

Depois de, no ano passado, termos projectado Blood, Sweat + Vinyl no primeiro Amplifest, um documentário sobre três das editoras mais influentes da música independente da América do Norte e sobre como o Do It Yourself lhes servia de catalizador para melhor desempenharem o seu papel, voltamos a escolher um filme que retrata uma ética com que é impossível não nos identificarmos para protagonizar a transformação da sala 2 do Hard Club em cinema.

There’s something in Fugazi, the post-hardcore band from Washington, that makes it one of the most important acts in the most recent decades of the alternative music scene. And no, it’s not solely their music – it’s the way it goes with their ethics, the way they regard every chord and every tour as something of their own doing, as something of their own right to share with people. And they shared it all, they still do it.

Fugazi is to DIY what water is to the human body – an enormous amount of it. To be fair, Fugazi is DIY: Mackaye, Picciotto, Lally and Canty live every portion of their band to the extent of having, with director Jem Cohen, edited Instrument, the film documenting the band’s first twelve years being active, being mainly composed of footage of concerts, interviews, practices, tours, and time spent on the studio. Even its soundtrack was scored by Fugazi.

Because we relate to the Do It Yourself life-ethic, we will go on the roundabout all over again and screen a film about it. During Amplifest’11, we choosed Blood, Sweat + Vinyl as on the movies to screen, being it about three of the most proeminent record labels in the Northern American scene, all of which endorse DIY. Instrument, more than a film about Fugazi, is a document on DIY.
