Inside Amplifest: Urfaust

Ever since Geist Ist Teufel came out, more than a decade ago, Dutch duo Urfaust have been taking black metal a step further, employing it as a means to spiritual enlightenment. Every component in Urfaust’s music plays a part in the exorcism: IX’s ice-cold riffing and idiosyncratic vocal output – lying somewhere between a desperate howl and a demented Gregorian monk’s chant – locks together with VRDRBR’s mid-paced, minimalistic and trance-inducing drumming to conjure a black magick experience that reeks of sulphur and nihilism. Only for true clochards, Urfaust’s infamous rites of intoxication will douse Hard Club in inebriating vapours and drive Amplifest into collective madness. While we wait for October 5th, Jim shared a few words with us.

What do you expect of the Amplifest audience?
Let’s see if the Amplifest crowd is like the normal crowd we rent to have: people standing in trance like voodoo zombies… Praising madness and Intoxication in full effect!

We like surprises, but what can we expect from your show?
We like surprises too!!!! So let’s see… If we tell you, wouldn’t it ruin the surprise you like so much?

What band do you really want to see at Amplifest?
Without a doubt WOVENHAND: the work of DAVID EUGENE EDWARDS has always been an inspiration… Also the devotion to his believes (although I do not share them), makes me have tons of respect for him.

If you had to pick a band or a musician of this Amplifest edition to play with who would it be?
Other than WOVENHAND, it must be CONAN! Manage to see them live a few times and fucking hell: they crush!!!! Also great guys as well… Would love to do some shows with these guys!

What records have you been listening to lately?
The 12″ of BATTLE RUINS comes to mind, but also a lot to COME REAP of THE DEVIL’S BLOOD.

Enough about music, Amplifest is also about other arts. What books have you been reading and what movies have you been watching lately that you want to recommend?
Seen a lot of movies the last months, but nothing special… Been revisiting a lot of 80’s classics… 12 MONKEYS was a great! As for books? Works of BRUSSELMANS are always great…
Currently on holiday and it’s the perfect read!
